OMB Member Spirit Displayed at
Extreme Makeover Homesite
From September 26 to October 4, 2007, Olympia Master Builders (OMB) member and 2007 Building Industry Association of Washington (BIAW) President, Daimon Doyle of Doyle Custom Homes, headed up an Extreme Makeover: Home Edition project in Kirkland, WA.
When ABC Television contacted BIAW about the Chapin family project five weeks before start date, the BIAW approached Doyle, who agreed that it was certainly a worthy project and something that he would be willing to do. "Building this home for the Chapin family has been one of the most difficult challenges of my career," said Doyle. "But it has also been one of the most rewarding, proving to me once again that homebuilders can be counted on to step up to the plate when it comes to helping someone in need."
Volunteers signed up by the hundreds, on so many different levels it was hard to fathom. Some heard about the project on TV or through their co-workers, others about the need for help through their church. Doyle said, "About midway through the project I became so overwhelmed by the dedication of all the people involved. They were coming back after their eight-hour work day and putting in another eight hours on the project. Kyle LaPierre, BIAW Treasurer, and Brad Spears, BIAW First Vice President, put 20 hours a day in during the five days. It was amazing to see the dedication and ownership the community put into this." According to Doyle the most common thing he heard from others was what a "spiritual experience" it was.
According to Paul and Stacey Muldoon of Edward Jones, "The greatest part of the Extreme Adventure was seeing the familiar faces involved at every level of participation on the projects. There was Daimon Doyle and Dick Box, Doyle Custom Homes Production Manager, of course, trying to choreograph the ballet of trades nailing, sawing, trowelling, compacting soil, swinging in walls, joists, more walls, and then trusses." Stacey and Paul volunteered to put furniture together in "Bin City" where all the home furnishings were being assembled.
OMB and BIAW Secretary Linda Mosier-Vaudt of Lumbermens Pro Build, put in countless hours helping throughout the makeover. OMB President, Mark Shaffer of Mark's Drywall said, "while my crew and I were at the site putting up drywall, I was so pleased to see several OMB members who volunteered for picking up scraps to carrying concrete to site locations. OMB's Executive Officer, Laura Kimbrough, and staff members, Tammi Jutte, Sally Darrow, Rhonda Calkins and Stacey Genzlinger also volunteered their time to help.
Volunteers stepped in and helped during the night while one inch of rain fell in a four hour period. Extreme conditions, extreme dedication, and extreme professionalism on the part of everyone involved are what finished this project. When asked if they would do it again, Dick Box, said "This was a once in a lifetime experience." Doyle said, “We all learned a lot throughout the project, and we built a beautiful house for a well deserving family, and we will leave it at that!"
