Connecting the Dots

Laura Kimbrough
OMB Executive Officer

One of the most rewarding things about my job is getting to see the "big picture" of the Olympia Master Builders (OMB) efforts and how everything the association does connects together.  As we enter into this campaign season, I wanted to share my perspective on how the dots connect.

In this issue of Chalk Line you will read President Karen McClennen's article about the how The Affordable Housing Council (TAHC) has been involved in endorsing candidates, making contributions, doing independent expenditures, holding fundraisers, etc.  And then you will read Government Affairs Director Will Stakelin's article about the Mazama Pocket Gopher and the challenges it is bringing to Thurston County.

Here's how I see the dots connecting. OMB has endorsed Dino Rossi's candidacy for governor of this state.  When Dino Rossi is elected he will appoint directors to all state agencies including the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Will's article explains the key role the Department of Fish and Wildlife plays in the issue of the Mazama Pocket Gopher in Thurston County and the havoc it has caused for our members to develop land they own in Thurston County.

So, that's one dot.  Here's another.  OMB has endorsed Jon Halverson for Thurston County Commissioner, District 2.  If you refer to Will's article you will see that ultimately the County is going to have to take action regarding the gopher.  So, if there are County  Commissioners who understand property rights and the importance to provide homes for families, they will make a balanced decision.  That's why it's important to support Jon Halverson's campaign.

Here's another dot.  There is a second County Commissioner race - Incumbent Cathy Wolfe being challenged by former County Commissioner Judy Wilson. Under our new "top two" primary system, both of them will automatically advance from the primary election to the general election. TAHC has decided to make an endorsement decision after the primary election.  So, depending on which one is endorsed and ultimately elected, they will have a say in what happens with the Mazama Pocket Gopher in Thurston County.

Maybe you don't personally support Dino Rossi for governor, maybe the idea of getting in politics is distasteful to you.  But, here's another dot -- "Do you enjoy making a living in the home building industry in this area and would you like to continue living in this part of the county?"

If your answer is "yes", I don't believe you have the luxury of not getting involved in politics.  Those who show up get to make the rules.  Those who vote and actively support candidates, get to say how we live here and the quality of life we enjoy.

The pocket gopher is just one example.  Read the long list of issues we are addressing on page 5. Each and every one of those issues is directly related to the elected officials in that jurisdiction. Somebody, somewhere voted for them and supported their campaigns.  You too are a "somebody" and I encourage you to look at the list of endorsed candidates on page 14 and remember to vote on August 19th.
